Bark or no bark—that’s the great BBQ pellet debate. Some pellet makers remove bark from the wood before making their pellets, while others keep it on. The question is whether it’s better to cook with pellets that include bark or with pellets made from wood that’s been de-barked, or if it matters at all.
The PID controller come in handy when using this grill seeing they help correct any errors or changes in the desired temperature. I love the WIFI capability, which makes it easy to control the temperature from my phone. Once I set the temperature, it maintained it, and whether I’m smoking salmon, ribs, or chicken, the results are always excellent.
Overall, I think you would be happy with the smaller smoker / grill. I really like what Green Mountain grills has done with the Davy Crockett model, and that is the unit I have personally. That said,Rec-Tec makes a great product, and some people prefer the cart stand it comes with rather than the fold up legs that Green Mountain grills uses on the Davy Crockett modeling. Either choice would be good for you if you are looking for a smaller unit. I am of course speaking about the mini version of the Rec-Tec. The larger version is excellent as well.
You’re not going to be able to cook as hot as some other pellet grills out there, but this unit should easily reach 420 degrees. For a relatively small package you can still cook a good amount of food. A 10lb brisket or a few slabs of ribs shouldn’t be a problem which should keep the campers happy!
Rating: This is an 8.5 out of 10 grill. It could’ve gotten a higher rating or at least a rating like its sibling Pit Boss, but too many quality control complaints brought its rating down many notches.
As smoking and grilling become more popular, increasingly there’s more crossover. The same person that enjoys smoking a pork butt for 10 hours on the weekend wants to be able to fire up steaks after work. In the past, that often meant owning multiple cookers: a traditional smoker to handle low-and-slow BBQ and a charcoal or gas grill for high-heat grilling. Not only does that get expensive, but it takes up valuable backyard real estate. More and more, however, people are looking for a single cooker, a smoker-grill combo that can handle both.
If you’ve reached this part of the blog post, I thank you for reading through. It’s a long one, but I wanted to give you as much practical advice as possible. To recap, there are some basic things you should know about buying a pellet smoker.
The huge cooking chamber can fit a couple of 30 lbs turkeys or even a 50 lbs whole hog! Inside the grill, it’s all quality build. Marine grade stainless steel parts all throughout, 1/4″ thick stainless steel fire pot, stainless steel grates, etc. This will not rust out on you. REC TEC is so confident in their grill, you even get a card on purchase with the direct line of the general manager, as well as the personal cell numbers of the co-founders, Ray Carnes, and Ron Cundy.
It can use two types of fuel – both propane and natural gas – giving it the versatility to be used when you’re camping with gas bottles or piped in to your home’s gas supply for maximum convenience. This is something only Camp Chef offer in their range.
To make things easier we have put together a list of the 5 things you should look for before purchasing a pellet grill. Knowing what to look for is the best way to ensure you get a grill that makes you happy.
Electric smokers don’t always get a lot of love on barbecue websites, you won’t see them on many best smoker lists either. Whether it’s purists that only want wood-fired BBQ, or maybe it’s a size factor so they often get overlooked. But there are those that find them convenient. Some have no other option because they live in an apartment. Either way, electric smokers have their place for some people,
It is a gas smoker, but you still need to add your wood chunks. Your fuel area is at the bottom with its own separate door so when you get in there to add your favorite smoking wood, you don’t lose heat in the main chamber. This is especially useful for those of us that live in areas with colder winters and need all the heat we can get.
A: Propane smokers provide an improved smoky flavor when associated to electric smokers. Propane smokers are comparable to the benefits that a gas grill provides more convenience than pellet or charcoal smokers.
Because it’s using the inverted flame and taking the heat from underneath, while the firebox has it’s side ventilation for oxygen, it’s a clean combustion process. Meaning that while that fire burns on top without smoldering, you’re only getting the cleanest thin blue smoke circulating through the unit. No bitter taste from over-smoking.
This post was EXACTLY what i was looking for! Have been longing for the ability to make the gooey delicate saucy brisket that we get out here at the chain Armadillo Willies, which i realize is not aiming for the stars… At Orchard Supply House last weekend saw a Traeger or two, and was thinking placing a smaller version $499 range (although $439 on the Traeger website) next to my gas Weber Spirit.
Multi-Position Ortech Controller: This is the most common type of controller used in pellet grills.  You select a temperature for the grill using either a dial or a digital touch pad.  The controller then feeds pellets at a predetermined rate that should get the grill close to where you want it.
There are cheaper units, but if you can afford this (And not quite ready to go all out on the Rec Tec), this is a great option. It’s a very high-quality unit that will serve you well for many years, even though there’s some breathing room between this and the very top of the line.
There are two other smokers that are quite comparable to this in terms of features and price. The first is the masterbuilt 20070910 30 inch smoker – you can read the full review here. The second is the Bradley 4-rack smokers. We have just updated out 2018 top 5 Bradley Smoker list here.
You should make sure the pellet smokerhas all the features you want. The control board is a feature used to input meat to the grill. Some pellet smokers though have an outdoor control board for meat probes. Some other important features include Wi-Fi capability, direct grilling option, secondary cooking racks and included probes. A computer, tab or mobile phone connectivity is also another important consideration because it helps with regulating heat.

This smoker is ideal for larger, full fat meat varieties like pork roasts, beef roasts, and baby back ribs. Other items like burgers, sausages, and lean steaks are not going to cook well in this unit. However, if you’re looking for simplicity of use and flexibility with wood fire smoking, the box is easily converted between different wood pellets without too much work. Plus, it’s just a really classy looking smoker.
The classic charcoal grilling system is really what made Weber famous. They’ve had a number of home runs, but this unit is what put them on the map. The classic design is ideal for a good-sized cooking surface (508 square inches), but an overall smaller sized grill when space is a concern. The bowl and lid are heavy duty steel with a porcelain glaze to eliminate scratching and surface abrasions.
Pellet Cost and Consumption: Cooking pellets for pellet grills cost about $1 per pound depending on the brand, flavor, and if you can get them on sale. The shipping cost can play a factor on their price as well. For a lower BTU, you can get a cheaper brand of pellet for 75¢ a pound, but as a consequence you’ll deal with more filler and they get consumed faster by the flames.
One of the most common problems people encounter with pellet grills is abnormal temperature fluctuations—the controller is set to 250°F, but the grill is dropping to 200°F then climbing to 325°F. Usually people assume that it’s a mechanical issue and either the controller or RTD probe need to be replaced. However, very often the problem is far simpler and the solution far easier.
Surety when cooking– the unit’s in-fabricated LED advanced temperature control framework gives you the certainty required when smoking or barbecuing consequently evacuating the mystery out of your cooking procedure.
As we’ve already said temperature control is the key to getting a moist succulent piece of meat. This pellet smoker comes with a built-in thermostatic control with a digital thermometer, so you can exclude any guesswork while barbecuing. If the temperature sensors detect a drop-in temperature they feed more wood pellets into the burner. This allows you to place your meat on the grill and then let the smoker do the work while you relax.
Size – I mean the grilling surface here. I’m perfectly aware that a family of 2 has different needs than a family of 6. There’s no point buying a huge pellet grill for two people, as you’ll probably never use the entire cooking surface.
It is also worth noting that a pellet smoker made of high quality materials will perform better. High quality materials will retain heat, ensure more efficient pellet consumption, and maintain temperature better in the cold weather.
This smoker uses dual meat probes to determine the temperature, and then displays the internal temperature through a convenient dual-LED temperature readout display. You don’t have to risk losing heat just to check on your food’s temperature every once in a while, making sure that you get tender and juicy food all the time.
Most people recommend the Green Mountain Grills Davy Crockett smoker for its affordability, despite its plethora of features including Open Flame Technology, which ensures that meats are thoroughly cooked. But what impressed us the most was its Sense-Mate feature. For a budget pick, we were surprised to see that it had some of the most advanced technologies that even the most high-end products use. There’s no denying that you’ll get more than what it’s priced at!
“It’s easy—maybe a little too easy,” I told the crowd of Barbecue University students gathered around the first wood pellet grill many had seen. People nodded—we had an understanding, right? Smoking and barbecuing are supposed to be hard work. If not chopping wood, then at least breathing in charcoal dust and smoke and laboring to maintain a steady temperature during a barbecue session that could last the better part of a day. Or night. Certainly no self-respecting pit master would subscribe to a “set it and forget it” philosophy. Pellet grills are a fad, I thought to myself, that will flame out fast.
Mention a pellet smoker and what comes to mind is the rich taste of BBQ, better control and convenience. These are exactly what the best pellet smokers should give you. To find out the best, among the many that are out there, you must consider all the various features. A burner that can give you control, convenience, long service and great flavor for your food are just some things the best pellet smoker should have. Let’s take a look at all the factors you need to consider when making your purchase.
3 Position Controller – Often referred to as LMH controllers, the 3 position controller has only 3 temperature settings. Low which is around 225°F, medium which is around 325°F and high which is around 425°F.
Next, consider if you’re in the market for a wet or dry smoker. A dry smoker will work great with juicier meats with higher fat content like brisket, shoulder, and ribs. However, if you’re looking to smoke leaner cuts and still get a moist final product, a smoker that allows for water smoking. Water smoking uses a water pan above the fire chamber that fills the smoker with water vapor, maintaining some of the moisture of the meat.
If you begin to get hooked on meat smoking, you will find yourself doing this cleaning on a fairly regular basis. Occasional cooks may see that this could be incorporated with the annual cleaning session. Before you start, make sure your pellet smoker is cold, preferably wait at least 24 hours after a cook before starting the cleaning process. If you are using an electric pellet smoker, make sure it is unplugged from a power source. If it uses gas, it would be an excellent time to uncouple it from the gas bottle to check the connections.
Set it and forget it. Fill the hopper with pellets, set your preferred temperature (and a timer if you need) and go prepare a side dish or drink beer with friends. No charcoal grill will give you that freedom.
As more pellet grills enter the market, they are forced to differentiate themselves from the competition. One way of doing that is through innovative technology and advanced abilities. When comparing pellet grills, look at the whole package, including its capabilities, as well as which features are available and whether they come standard or are optional. Some of the more popular features to look for include:
